The team is permanent and chosen first.

Starter kit
Once, when you choose a team: 32 Potato Mochi, 16 torches, 16 Poke Balls and the team item above. Choosing a class then adds the class kit, see Classes.
Chat colours
Choosing a team joins a vanilla scoreboard team (steamon_<team>), which colours your name in chat, in the tab list and on your name tag. A player already on another scoreboard team is moved. Nickname and chat-head mods are unaffected.
